Ruddy Quail-Dove (Geotrygon montana)

Geotrygon montana is widely distributed in the Neotropics from northern Mexico south to Paraguay and northern Argentina, and throughout the West Indies. It inhabits humid tropical, semi-deciduous, and scrub forests, and woodlands with dense understorey; apparently has adapted to some coffee and cacao plantations, but is sensitive to a large scale forest fragmentation; up to 2,600 m. It is a medium-sized (19-28 cm) stocky dove. The upperparts are reddish-brown, with purple-red iridescence, in the male, and olive-brown in the female; the underparts are mainly buff. A pale stripe on sides of the head. The breeding season varies across the range. The nest is a flimsy platform of twigs in a shrub or a tree, a cluster of fern fronds, epiphytes, or on old stumps; at 0.5-6 m, but sometimes on the ground. Two eggs per clutch; incubation 10-11 days, by both parents. The young fledge after ca. 14 days. This species forages primarily on the forest floor for seeds, fruit, and apparently small invertebrates.
